The original warehouse bays of this 100-year-old tobacco warehouse were converted into swing space for 15 of Duke University's student service departments previously located off campus. During the renovation, each 8,800 SF bay was given a distinct, bright color scheme to provide an identity the department going into it. Each color scheme was incorporated into carpet accents and signage per bay.
In order to provide orientation and a counterpoint to the rigid rectangular grid of closely-spaced timber columns within the building bays, a gently curving wall was developed to define the major circulation path on the 1st floor. This wall was articulated by materials with an industrial theme, and accent lighting was included with industrial type fixtures. Openings within the walls form entrances to various departments or amenities.
Visa Services on the first floor contains workspace, a reception area, and a lobby for visitors.
Classroom space was incorporated into the building for information sessions and seminars.
The Career Center's open floor plan offers mezzanines that lead up to private conference rooms.
The Robertson Scholars bay allows for workspace and offers a central collaboratory adjacent to a large private conference room.

Signage and wayfinding elements were designed and custom-made in keeping with the industrial character of the space. These included painted steel and aluminum components and each incorporated a resin (3-Form) panel tied to the primary accent color of the space.
